N° 0007 · the warming datum

Datum aestiva

the warming datum · grown from 114 days of Delhi daily climate, 1 Jan – 24 Apr 2017 · temperature is the colour, the heat climbs as it grows · died on the export date

what is it

A hundred and fourteen days of Delhi weather, the slide from winter into the building pre-monsoon heat. As the creature grows it visibly warms, blue at the root, red at the tips.

how is it made

Temperature sets the colour, climbing from cool blue to hot red as the season advances. The day-to-day temperature swing drives step length, so volatile weather stretches the shoots. Humidity drives thickness. Wind speed bends the angle. A sharp temperature swing on a day boundary is a shock.

what to look for

  • The heat climbs. because temperature is the colour and the season only rises, the creature reddens from base to tip. The warming is literally legible.
  • A lean creature. 114 days is thin, interpolated into a smooth form rather than padded. Honest about how little data it stands on.

the honest part

The soft spot is the direction. Wind speed bends the angle, but speed is energy, not a heading, so the steering is the least convincing field here. Temperature as colour is the strong, legible choice: the warming is something you can literally read as the creature grows.

One method, many species, two ways to die.
