N° 0004 · the biting datum

Datum sanguinaria

the biting datum · grown from 29,992 reported dog bites in New York City, 2015–2023 · died on the export date

what is it

Almost thirty thousand reported dog bites in New York, 2015 to 2023. A creature grown from other people's teeth.

how is it made

Season, read as a sine wave over the year, drives the growth angle and the colour. The weekly bite count drives step length, the proportion of intact dogs drives thickness. A week in the top few percent of bite counts triggers a shock.

what to look for

  • Summer peaks. bites peak in summer, and that is where the creature grows and branches hardest.
  • Breed left out. breed was deliberately kept out as a steering axis: free text, spelling variants, too many unknowns, and the bias it would bake in.

the honest part

The weakest direction in the project. The growth angle comes from the season, read off the calendar, rather than from a real directional field in the data, and the colour leans on that same season. A genuinely measured compass, like the wind in ventosa, would make a stronger creature. This dataset simply doesn't carry one.

One method, many species, two ways to die.
