N° 0001 · the windy datum

Datum ventosa

the windy datum · grown from 25 years of wind, KNMI station 209 · direction is the colour, the compass is the palette · died on the export date

what is it

Wind measured week after week at a single Dutch weather station, turned into a growing creature. The station is still measuring. The organism didn't die because the source dried up, but because the maker pulled the data and looked away on the export date.

how is it made

Each week is one growth step. Wind direction physically pushes the shoot one way and sets its colour at the same time, so the whole palette is a compass. Wind speed sets how far a shoot reaches, gust strength sets its thickness. A week with a hard gust counts as a shock: a kink, a thickened scar, a warm halo that fades over the following weeks.

what to look for

  • A real compass. one of the few specimens whose direction is a genuinely measured field. It fans out asymmetrically, leaning into the prevailing southwesterly wind.
  • Winter drift. gusts cluster in the winters, and that is where the creature branches hardest.

the honest part

As faithful as a creature gets: four channels, four independently measured fields, nothing forced to do double duty. The direction is a true measured compass, taken straight from the wind, not invented from the calendar.

One method, many species, two ways to die.
