N° 0010 · the rain-fed datum

Datum pluviae

the rain-fed datum · grown from Open-Meteo daily weather at Ukkel, Belgium · fed live from the sky · dies where the record ends

what is it

The second living creature, fed daily weather above Ukkel in Belgium. Like the seismic one it pulls fresh measurements from an open source each time it opens, and lives as long as the weather station keeps reporting. Nobody sets its death date; the sky does.

how is it made

Each day is one growth step. The dominant wind direction steers the angle, a measured heading. The day's solar radiation drives step length, the slow seasonal swell of the year's energy. Rainfall drives thickness, the mass of water that fell. Daily mean temperature sets the colour, cold blue to warm red. A day in the wettest few percent is a shock.

what to look for

  • Alive. no fixed death date. It reads alive while the weather feed stays fresh, and dies only if the daily readings stop for more than three times the usual gap.
  • Four clean fields. wind, sun, rain and temperature: four separate measured fields, no calendar axis anywhere.

the honest part

One of the cleanest mappings in the project, and it carries the second form of death: the source's silence, not the maker, ends it. The honest catch is the same as the seismic one: the baked-in history before the live feed is synthetic, structurally faithful but invented, because the build environment had no internet. Online, it grows on real Open-Meteo data from the stem boundary forward.

One method, many species, two ways to die.
